U.S. President Donald Trump revealed plans for a new immigration initiative offering financial incentives to undocumented immigrants who choose to leave the country voluntarily. In an interview aired Tuesday on Fox Noticias, Trump said the program would provide stipends, plane tickets, and the possibility of legal reentry in the future.
"We’re going to give them a stipend and a plane ticket," Trump said during the interview with Rachel Campos-Duffy. "If they’re good, if we want them back in, we’re going to work with them to get them back in as quickly as we can."
A White House spokesperson declined to elaborate further on the president’s remarks.
This proposed "self-deportation" program adds to Trump’s broader immigration agenda, which includes record-high deportation targets and legal measures to expand enforcement. The administration has increasingly encouraged undocumented immigrants to take part in their own removal by using tools like the CBP Home app, which allows individuals to declare their intent to leave the U.S.
Trump, the Republican front-runner for the 2024 election, has made immigration reform a central issue, emphasizing strict border control and expedited deportation procedures. This latest proposal introduces a controversial shift by offering monetary support to facilitate voluntary departures and streamline future legal immigration for compliant individuals.
As Trump seeks to appeal to both hardline conservatives and moderates, the proposed financial aid for undocumented immigrants may stir debate among voters, legal experts, and immigrant advocacy groups. The White House has not provided details on the amount of the stipend or the criteria for reentry.
The program, if implemented, could become a cornerstone of Trump’s revamped immigration strategy heading into the election season.
