U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday expressed optimism about ongoing diplomatic efforts with Iran, suggesting progress in talks aimed at preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. Speaking at Morristown Airport in New Jersey before returning to Washington, Trump said U.S. negotiators had “very good” discussions with Iranian officials over the weekend.
“I think we could have some good news on the Iran front,” he told reporters, reflecting on meetings held in Rome between U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and a delegation from Iran. Although he didn’t disclose specific outcomes, Trump indicated that serious progress had been made.
“I don’t know if I’ll be telling you anything good or bad over the next two days, but I have a feeling I might be telling you something good,” he added, fueling speculation about a potential diplomatic breakthrough.
The comments come amid renewed efforts by the U.S. to engage Tehran diplomatically, focusing on nuclear non-proliferation and regional stability. Washington has long sought assurances that Iran will not resume its controversial nuclear program, a key concern since the U.S. withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal under Trump’s previous term.
This recent dialogue signals a potential thaw in U.S.-Iran relations, although tensions remain high. A successful agreement could mark a significant step toward restoring diplomatic channels and easing geopolitical strains in the Middle East.
Trump’s remarks have drawn attention from global analysts watching closely for signs of a shift in U.S. foreign policy. With little detail yet disclosed, the coming days could be pivotal in determining whether real progress has been achieved or whether optimism will give way to renewed stalemate.
The White House has not provided further comment on the status of the talks.
