U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Republicans will hold a national convention ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, a move that breaks from tradition as such events are usually reserved for presidential election years.
“The Republican Party wants, very badly, a Convention for the 2026 Midterm Election. We will have one at the highest level. It will be both fun, and very productive,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The decision highlights the GOP’s strategy to energize voters and strengthen party unity as it seeks to maintain its slim control of Congress. Currently, Republicans hold a 53–47 majority in the Senate and a 219–213 edge in the House of Representatives. Losing even a handful of seats could weaken Trump’s influence and ability to push forward his legislative agenda.
Reports also suggest Democrats are considering a similar move. Axios recently noted that Democratic leaders are weighing the idea of hosting a convention before the midterms to counter Republican momentum.
This development comes as both parties battle fiercely over congressional redistricting, a factor that could significantly impact control of the House in 2026. With the balance of power in Congress hanging by just a few seats, both Republicans and Democrats are intensifying efforts to secure voter loyalty and expand their influence.
By turning the midterm elections into a convention-driven event, Republicans aim to rally their base and spotlight key issues ahead of November 2026. The unprecedented step could reshape how future midterm campaigns are conducted, with national conventions potentially becoming another tool in the fight for congressional control.
