British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Western leaders on Sunday to reinforce European support for Ukraine amid tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump. The meeting follows a heated exchange between Zelenskiy and Trump, who threatened to cut aid, accusing Ukraine of ingratitude.
On Saturday, Zelenskiy arrived in London, receiving a warm welcome from Starmer at Downing Street. The British leader reaffirmed the UK’s unwavering support, emphasizing military aid, training, and financial assistance. European nations now face the challenge of filling the gap if U.S. support wanes. Germany has called for releasing €3 billion ($3.1 billion) in aid, but Europe still lacks the military capabilities of the U.S.
Sunday’s high-stakes meeting will include Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, NATO’s Mark Rutte, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and leaders from Germany, Spain, Canada, and Poland. They aim to solidify a European-led security framework for Ukraine while keeping U.S. involvement in discussions.
The urgency follows a shift in U.S.-Ukraine relations after Trump’s latest remarks. Starmer, who recently met Trump, is attempting to position the UK as a bridge between the U.S. and Europe, encouraging alignment on security measures. Some European leaders are urging Zelenskiy to repair ties with Trump, emphasizing the need for continued diplomatic engagement.
With an extraordinary EU summit ahead, Europe must decide whether it can sustain Ukraine’s defense or persuade Washington to maintain its role. The coming days will be crucial in determining the future of Western support for Ukraine and the prospects of a lasting peace deal.
