British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing mounting political pressure after reports emerged that Health Secretary Wes Streeting may resign and trigger a Labour leadership contest. The reported move overshadowed Wednesday’s King’s Speech, where King Charles formally presented the government’s legislative agenda in parliament.
According to reports, Streeting could step down as early as Thursday to challenge Starmer’s leadership following Labour’s disappointing performance in recent local and regional elections. The speculation intensified concerns within the Labour Party, with more than 90 lawmakers reportedly urging Starmer to announce a timetable for his departure ahead of the next UK general election in 2029.
Financial markets reacted quickly to the political uncertainty, with UK government borrowing costs rising before easing later in the day. Downing Street attempted to calm tensions, saying Starmer still had “full confidence” in Streeting, though neither the prime minister nor the health secretary directly denied the reports.
Streeting later posted on X about progress in reducing NHS waiting times, highlighting his achievements while avoiding any mention of leadership ambitions. To officially launch a leadership bid, Streeting would need support from at least 81 Labour lawmakers.
Potential rivals within Labour include Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham and former deputy prime minister Angela Rayner, although both face obstacles that could complicate any leadership campaign. Political observers also noted that Ed Miliband could emerge as a candidate representing Labour’s left wing.
Despite the growing turmoil, Starmer used the King’s Speech to outline plans focused on economic growth, defence, and energy security. However, many of the policies had already been announced previously, limiting the speech’s impact at a time when Starmer is struggling to strengthen his authority.
The dramatic political backdrop even spilled into parliamentary tradition, as lawmakers joked about leadership speculation during the historic ceremony attended by King Charles.
