Russian attacks on cities in eastern and southeastern Ukraine killed at least four people and injured several others late Tuesday, according to local officials and prosecutors. The latest wave of strikes highlights the ongoing intensity of the Russia-Ukraine war, particularly in regions near the front line.
In Ukraine’s Donetsk region, prosecutors reported that three people were killed and five others wounded in two separate bomb attacks on the city of Sloviansk. The city remains a critical defensive position within Ukraine’s heavily fortified “fortress belt,” a network of strongholds viewed as essential for slowing Russia’s gradual advance in the Donetsk area.
Authorities said the attacks caused significant destruction and added pressure on a region that has been at the center of military operations throughout the conflict. Sloviansk continues to play a strategic role in Ukraine’s efforts to contain Russian forces in eastern Ukraine.
Meanwhile, in the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, Ukrainian national police said a large-scale drone assault resulted in one fatality and left seven people injured. According to officials, the victim was killed while inside a vehicle during the attack.
Images shared online showed extensive damage, including buildings engulfed in flames, rooftops on fire, and sections of structures reduced to rubble. Zaporizhzhia Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov stated that the city was hit by five separate strikes. The attacks reportedly sparked fires in a residential building and a shopping center, while an educational institution also suffered damage.
Reuters noted that it was unable to independently verify the reports from either location. Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, both Moscow and Kyiv have consistently denied intentionally targeting civilians. However, attacks on urban areas continue to result in civilian casualties and widespread damage across Ukraine.
The latest strikes underscore the continuing security challenges facing Ukraine as the conflict enters another critical phase.
