Russian air defense systems intercepted multiple drones targeting Moscow and several nearby regions late Wednesday and early Thursday, authorities confirmed. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced on Telegram that two drones aimed at the capital were destroyed, and debris is currently being examined by specialists.
In response to the aerial threat, operations at Moscow's Vnukovo International Airport were temporarily suspended. Aviation regulator Rosaviatsiya also implemented flight restrictions at other airports along the Volga River, though they were lifted shortly after.
The drone attacks are part of a broader escalation in aerial incursions across Russia. Earlier in the day, the governor of Voronezh, a region bordering Ukraine, reported over 40 drones had been shot down. In the neighboring Bryansk region, officials confirmed the destruction of seven drones.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence issued a statement reporting that 18 drones had been intercepted over a three-hour period, affecting several regions across central and southern Russia. The uptick in drone activity highlights growing security concerns within the Russian Federation, particularly in areas bordering Ukraine.
As drone warfare becomes increasingly prevalent in the ongoing conflict, Russian defense forces continue to bolster airspace security around key infrastructure, including government buildings, airports, and border towns. These incidents follow a pattern of escalating drone strikes targeting strategic locations deep within Russian territory.
With tensions rising and drone threats expanding beyond frontline zones, Russia’s domestic security measures are likely to remain on high alert. Authorities have not released further details regarding the origin of the drones or potential damage from the debris.
