Russian forces have seized control of two additional Ukrainian settlements, according to a statement released by Russia's Defence Ministry on Tuesday. The ministry confirmed that its armed forces took over the village of Kalenyky in the eastern Donetsk region and established control over Sopych in the northern Sumy region.

The announcement came just one day after both Moscow and Kyiv issued contradictory claims regarding battlefield progress along the sprawling 1,250-kilometer frontline — a war that has now stretched into its fourth year with no signs of resolution.

Sopych sits along the Russian border in the Sumy region, an area where Russian troops have persistently attempted to consolidate a foothold over recent months. Meanwhile, Kalenyky lies to the east of the heavily fortified city of Sloviansk, a strategically significant urban center. Russia's top military commander, General Valery Gerasimov, stated on Monday that his forces are "actively moving towards Sloviansk" and are continuing efforts to establish buffer zones across both the Sumy and Kharkiv regions.

Ukraine's public broadcaster Suspilne had previously reported that Russian troops entered Kalenyky and forcibly relocated 19 civilians into Russian-controlled territory — a claim cited by a former Ukrainian intelligence chief.

Despite Russian advances, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pushed back against narratives of a large-scale Russian offensive, asserting that Ukrainian forces had successfully disrupted enemy assault plans. He noted that the intensity of Russian attacks fell far short of what military commanders had reportedly promised Kremlin leadership.

On the air defense front, Russia's Defence Ministry reported that its systems intercepted 35 Ukrainian drones between 1:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. local time, with the majority neutralized over the Krasnodar region near Ukraine's eastern border.

The conflict continues to evolve rapidly, with both sides claiming tactical gains as international pressure for a ceasefire grows.
