Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply as U.S. officials were informed that Israel is fully prepared to launch a military operation against Iran, according to CBS News. The intelligence reportedly prompted Washington to evacuate non-emergency and non-military personnel from Iraq this week amid growing concerns of Iranian retaliation.
Sources told CBS that the U.S. expects Iran to potentially target American military and diplomatic facilities in Iraq if conflict erupts. President Donald Trump confirmed the evacuation order on Wednesday, signaling that the situation has become increasingly volatile.
Iran’s Defense Minister, Aziz Nasirzadeh, warned that Tehran could strike U.S. bases in the region should hostilities break out. The threat further underscores the fragile security landscape in the Middle East, with both military and diplomatic tensions at a high.
Despite ongoing nuclear negotiations, there has been little indication of meaningful progress. Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, is scheduled to meet with Iranian representatives in the coming days. However, Trump has expressed growing skepticism, stating he is losing confidence in a potential agreement and reaffirming his stance against allowing Iran to enrich uranium.
In May, reports emerged that Israel was preparing contingency plans to attack Iran’s nuclear sites if diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran failed. This week's developments suggest those plans may be nearing execution, with regional allies bracing for possible fallout.
As geopolitical risk intensifies, global markets and energy prices remain sensitive to any further escalation between Iran, Israel, and the United States. The situation remains fluid, with the potential for rapid changes depending on the outcome of nuclear talks and strategic decisions by all parties involved.
