Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski on Monday urged U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration to recognize that Russian President Vladimir Putin is "mocking their goodwill" following a deadly missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Sumy. The remarks came ahead of a meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Luxembourg.
Sikorski condemned the recent attacks on Ukrainian cities, including Sumy and Kryvyi Rih, calling them “heinous” and a direct response to Ukraine's commitment to peace. “Ukraine unconditionally agreed to a ceasefire over a month ago. The heinous attacks on Kryvyi Rih and on Sumy is Russia’s mocking answer,” he stated.
The missile strike on Sumy, which resulted in civilian casualties, has further intensified criticism of Moscow's military aggression despite recent diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict. The attack also raises questions about the effectiveness of current international peace initiatives and the role of the U.S. in influencing Russian behavior.
Sikorski emphasized that the latest Russian offensive highlights the need for the U.S. to reconsider its approach to Moscow. “I hope that President Trump and the U.S. administration see that the leader of Russia is mocking their goodwill, and I hope the right decisions are taken,” he said.
As tensions escalate in Eastern Europe, EU leaders continue to push for stronger support for Ukraine and tougher sanctions on Russia. The situation underscores growing divisions within Western alliances about how to manage relations with the Kremlin and support Ukraine’s sovereignty amid ongoing conflict. The international community watches closely as diplomatic and military strategies are reassessed in light of recent events.
