North Korean leader Kim Jong Un underscored the growing importance of the country’s Air Force in supporting its nuclear war deterrence strategy as he marked the military branch’s 80th anniversary alongside his daughter, according to state media reports on Sunday. The event showcased Pyongyang’s expanding aerial capabilities, with photos from the Rodong Sinmun newspaper revealing unmanned aircraft, mobile missile launchers, and various advanced aviation assets on display.
The anniversary celebration took place amid rising global concerns over North Korea’s rapidly developing drone program. A Ukrainian intelligence official previously told Reuters that Pyongyang has begun mass-producing small, short-range First Person View (FPV) drones as well as larger battlefield attack drones with medium-range capabilities. These developments signal North Korea’s continued push to modernize its military technology despite international sanctions and diplomatic pressure.
Kim Jong Un, dressed in a long leather coat and accompanied by his young daughter, observed an air show and toured several aircraft, including an airborne early-warning plane that was first revealed earlier this year. State media images highlighted the regime’s efforts to project strength and underscore its commitment to enhancing aerial operations as part of its broader defense strategy.
Kim expressed “great” expectations for the Air Force, stating it would play a crucial role in strengthening the nation’s nuclear deterrent. According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), he emphasized that the Air Force must be prepared to counter espionage activities and respond decisively to any military provocations from enemy forces.
He also pledged that the Air Force would receive new strategic assets, though he did not specify what these additions would include. The remarks come as North Korea continues to prioritize military modernization and display its evolving capabilities on the global stage.
