A Minnesota state assemblywoman and her husband were killed in a politically motivated shooting on Saturday, prompting a massive manhunt. Melissa Hortman, a senior Democratic lawmaker and former assembly speaker, was shot dead in her Brooklyn Park home along with her husband, Mark. Authorities identified the suspect as 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, who is still at large and considered armed and dangerous.
Boelter posed as a police officer, wore tactical gear, and drove a vehicle resembling a patrol SUV. He first shot Democratic Senator John Hoffman and his wife in their Champlin home, critically injuring both. He then drove five miles to the Hortmans' residence, where he exchanged gunfire with responding officers before fleeing.
Inside Boelter’s abandoned vehicle, authorities found a manifesto and a list of roughly 70 potential targets, including Democratic officials like Governor Tim Walz, Senator Tina Smith, Attorney General Keith Ellison, and Rep. Ilhan Omar. FBI officials labeled the attack a "deliberate and violent assault on public servants" and offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to Boelter’s arrest.
Boelter’s background includes ties to evangelical ministries and claims of security experience in Gaza and Africa. Flyers with “No Kings” slogans were also discovered in his vehicle, though authorities found no link to protests occurring nationwide on the same day.
This incident adds to growing concerns over politically motivated violence in the U.S., echoing past threats against figures like Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the 2021 Capitol riot. Governor Walz condemned the shootings, calling them a direct attack on democracy and urging for an end to escalating political hatred. Security has been heightened as the suspect remains at large.
