Even for former First Couple Barack and Michelle Obama, home life is a bit lonely now that their two daughters have gone to college. But being empty nesters has its perks as well. The former FLOTUS reveals that she now has more “emotional time” for her loving husband.
Michelle Obama was recently a guest on Oprah Winfrey’s “Oprah’s 2020 Vision: Your Life In Focus” tour, People reported. The two friends talked about a lot of topics that eventually touched on what the former First Lady’s home life is like now that both Malia and Sasha are already in college.
Mrs. Obama opened up on how parenting can be a very demanding job. “Parenting takes up a lot of emotional space,” Michelle said. “I put a lot of time and energy into parenting these girls but right now we are trying to make their lives normal — so that means weekends were a pain.”
Apparently, even as the First Couple, Barack and Michelle Obama had to worry about the same things every parent does. “We had to worry about what parties they were going to, whether there was alcohol, I had to know who the parents were, so every weekend for me was hard,” she added.
But with both of their daughter away from home, things have definitely changed at home. “And they’re gone, thank God,” the “Becoming” author and Grammy winner joked.
Other than missing her daughters, the change in pace is a welcome breather for Michelle who now has more time to concentrate on things loves. “All that energy I can now place back on me and spending time figuring out my next chapter, how I want to spend the rest of my life,” Mrs. Obama said.
“We have more emotional time, emotional energy,” Michelle explained. “It’s just me and him and [the family dogs] Bo and Sunny and dinner. And they don’t talk, the dogs.”
The love the former First Couple share remains undiminished throughout the years. “Like the Beatles said: It’s getting better all the time. Thanks, babe, for 27 amazing years,” Barack Obama posted on social media during their anniversary, Glamour reported.
Meanwhile, Michelle’s message is just as sweet. “27 years ago, this guy promised me a life full of adventure,” she wrote on Instagram. “I’d say he’s delivered. Here’s to our next chapter of becoming empty nesters and discovering what’s next—while still feeling the magic that brought us together all those years ago. Happy anniversary, Barack. ????”
