President Joe Biden's abrupt decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential election has generated considerable commotion within the Democratic Party and beyond. The 81-year-old's revelation has generated a surge of support for former First Lady Michelle Obama, as many people believe she is the one candidate capable of triumphing over former President Donald Trump.
Biden, who has publicly supported Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor, declared, "While it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term."
After a disappointing debate performance in late June, he decided in response to increasing pressure from his party, primarily due to concerns about his age and physical condition, Business Times reported.
There has been a widespread demand on social media and from prominent individuals for Michelle Obama to enter the contest. Steven Bartlett, a renowned entrepreneur, indicated that now, only Michelle has the potential to defeat Trump. That is an indisputable fact. This sentiment has been extensively disseminated, with many individuals firmly convinced that her widespread appeal and composed demeanor render her a formidable candidate.
Senator Kevin Cramer of North Dakota stated that Michelle Obama would likely be the most capable individual to maintain party unity and initiate progress due to her widespread fame.
There has been significant online activity on social media platforms urging Obama to enter the political race.
One person tweeted, "Michelle Obama... your country needs you... PLEASE throw your hat in the presidential race... you can beat him and think your husband was the first black president and you can be the first black and woman... power couple extraordinaire." Another individual believed that Michelle Obama was the sole candidate to defeat Trump.
Although there is an increasing amount of support for Michelle Obama, Biden remains unwavering in his endorsement of Kamala Harris. In his X article, he explicitly expressed his unequivocal support and endorsement of Kamala as our party's nominee this year. Democrats, we must unite and triumph over Trump.
Biden's choice follows a period of seclusion at his residence in Delaware following his diagnosis with COVID-19. He has been seeking advice from trusted advisors and family members over his political future, ultimately choosing to withdraw from the competition. The senior campaign and White House officials were informed within moments before his public announcement, indicating the highly confidential nature of his choice.
The Democratic Party is currently faced with the task of identifying a fresh candidate to confront Trump. Kamala Harris, Biden's vice president, has received support from Biden and is regarded as a possible heir. Nevertheless, her approval ratings have been subpar, which could hinder her chances of securing the nomination.
Gavin Newsom, the current governor of California, has been suggested as a possible candidate. Although he holds considerable influence inside the party and is renowned for his exceptional debating skills, he has consistently affirmed his decision not to compete against Harris.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has also been suggested. Whitmer's resounding re-election victory and her ability to maintain control over both state legislature chambers have solidified her position as a prominent and influential person within the Democratic Party. Nevertheless, she has explicitly declared that she would not participate in the current year's election if Biden were to resign.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, renowned for his catchphrase "Achieve tangible results," is likewise regarded as a promising figure within the political party. Although he has been preparing for a possible candidacy in 2028, he has expressed support for Biden and advocated for the party to prioritize productivity over anxiety.
The possibility of Michelle Obama running for office remains a subject of substantial debate. A recent Ipsos poll revealed that she is the one hypothetical candidate capable of decisively defeating Trump in a one-on-one contest, and she has consistently ranked highest in favorability among registered voters. Nevertheless, her prior assertions indicate that it is improbable for her to participate in the race.
During a conversation with Oprah Winfrey, she said, "Politics is hard. And the people who get into it... you've got to want it. It's got to be in your soul, because it is so important. It is not in my soul."
