U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to travel to the Middle East next week, with planned visits to Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Bahrain, according to a report from Axios citing multiple sources familiar with the matter.
The trip highlights the United States' continued engagement with key Gulf allies amid ongoing regional and global challenges. Rubio's visit is anticipated to focus on strengthening diplomatic ties, discussing regional security issues, and enhancing cooperation between Washington and Gulf nations.
According to Axios, Rubio is also expected to participate in a summit with foreign ministers from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in Bahrain. The GCC is composed of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, and serves as a major political and economic alliance in the Gulf region. The meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for discussions on regional stability, economic collaboration, energy security, and broader geopolitical developments affecting the Middle East.
The planned trip comes at a time when the United States is seeking to reinforce partnerships across the Gulf and address a range of strategic concerns. Meetings with senior government officials in Kuwait, the UAE, and Bahrain could help advance diplomatic cooperation on issues including trade, defense, investment, and regional security.
Axios first reported Rubio's expected itinerary, citing two sources familiar with the travel plans. The publication later reported that the Secretary of State is likely to hold a GCC foreign ministers' summit in Bahrain, based on information from a third unidentified source.
As of Friday, the U.S. State Department had not publicly confirmed the trip. The department also did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the reported travel plans.
If confirmed, Rubio's Middle East visit would mark an important diplomatic engagement for the United States and underscore Washington's commitment to maintaining strong relationships with Gulf partners while addressing critical regional issues.
