Washington, D.C.’s iconic Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is facing criticism after newly applied paint began peeling less than two weeks after the completion of a $14.7 million renovation project announced by President Donald Trump.

The historic landmark underwent extensive restoration earlier this year under a no-bid contract awarded to Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings. The renovation was part of Trump’s broader initiative to reshape the nation’s capital, which includes plans for a new White House ballroom and the construction of a large commemorative arch near Arlington National Cemetery.

Trump declared the reflecting pool project complete on June 6. However, visitors and observers soon noticed issues with the renovation. By Thursday, sections of paint were visibly peeling from the bottom of the pool and drifting into the water. The pool had also developed a noticeable algae bloom, turning the water green rather than the expected dark blue appearance.

In response to the algae problem, workers reportedly began adding hydrogen peroxide to the water earlier in the week in an effort to restore its appearance and improve water quality.

The National Park Service, which manages the National Mall and the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, has not yet issued a public statement regarding the peeling paint or algae concerns. Atlantic Industrial Coatings also had not commented at the time of reporting.

Tourists visiting the landmark expressed disappointment with the results of the costly renovation. Robert Dale, a visitor from Edwards, Colorado, questioned the project’s value, suggesting that public funds could have been allocated more effectively. He also noted that the reflecting pool appeared attractive before the recent work was undertaken.

The renovation has renewed debate over Trump’s approach to redevelopment projects in Washington, D.C. Critics argue that accelerated construction efforts bypass established planning and preservation processes designed to protect the city’s historic character. Supporters, however, defend the administration’s vision, citing the president’s background in real estate development.

The controversy comes amid broader scrutiny of Trump’s spending priorities, including questions surrounding a reported $400 million aircraft gift from Qatar intended for future Air Force One service. Experts have warned that significant security and communications upgrades would be required before the aircraft could safely transport the president and official personnel.
