Former Maine Governor Paul LePage has secured the Republican nomination for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, setting the stage for a closely watched showdown in the 2026 U.S. House election. The race is expected to draw national attention as it could play a significant role in determining control of the House of Representatives.

LePage, a prominent Republican figure known for his outspoken political style, won the GOP primary on Tuesday and will now focus on the general election campaign. His return to the political spotlight comes after serving two terms as Maine governor and remaining an influential voice within the state’s Republican Party.

Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, which covers much of the state’s rural and forested interior, is considered one of the most competitive congressional districts in the country. Political analysts view the seat as a crucial battleground that could help shape the balance of power in Congress following the 2026 midterm elections.

On the Democratic side, voters selected a nominee from a crowded primary field that featured state Senator Joe Baldacci along with progressive candidates Matt Dunlap, Jordan Wood, and Paige Loud. The Democratic contender will now face LePage in what is expected to become a high-profile and closely contested race.

The congressional seat became open after Democratic Representative Jared Golden announced he would not seek re-election. Golden, a centrist Democrat, had successfully maintained control of the district despite its tendency to favor Republican candidates in presidential elections. His departure creates a rare open-seat contest that both parties see as a major opportunity.

As with all statewide and federal elections in Maine, the final outcome may not be immediately known because of the state’s ranked-choice voting system. The voting method can require additional rounds of counting if no candidate receives a majority in the initial tally.

With national political stakes and strong candidates from both parties, the Maine 2nd Congressional District race is expected to be one of the most closely watched elections of 2026.
