Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone call on Sunday to discuss efforts to resolve the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to Russia’s Foreign Ministry. The conversation covered prospects for peace and preparations for renewed Russian-Ukrainian negotiations scheduled for June 2 in Istanbul, Turkey.
Lavrov and Rubio exchanged views on possible diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending the war, now in its third year. The U.S. State Department confirmed the call was made at Moscow’s request. During the discussion, Rubio reaffirmed President Donald Trump’s position supporting continued direct dialogue between Russia and Ukraine to reach a “lasting peace.”
The Russian side emphasized the importance of resuming talks and reiterated its commitment to seeking a negotiated resolution. The ministry also noted that the call included a discussion on recent deadly attacks within Russian territory.
Rubio offered condolences for the deaths and injuries caused by the destruction of two bridges in regions bordering Ukraine. Russian officials reported that seven people were killed and 69 wounded in the explosions, which occurred on Saturday.
Lavrov assured that Russian authorities are conducting a full investigation into the incidents, promising that those responsible will be identified and brought to justice.
The upcoming talks in Istanbul are viewed as a key opportunity to revive stalled peace efforts amid intensifying hostilities. Both sides appear under international pressure to reduce tensions and find a diplomatic path forward.
As geopolitical tensions remain high, the global community is closely monitoring developments, with hopes that the new round of negotiations could mark a turning point in the Russia-Ukraine war.
