North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reiterated his unwavering commitment to strengthening the alliance between North Korea and Russia, in a personal letter congratulating Russian President Vladimir Putin on his birthday. The message, carried by North Korea’s state news agency KCNA, praised Putin’s leadership and emphasized the enduring friendship between the two nations.
Kim expressed full confidence that “the relations of alliance between the two countries will be invariably carried forward in the future,” citing the “warm friendly relations and close comradely ties” between himself and Putin as the foundation for continued cooperation.
The North Korean leader also reaffirmed his support for Russia’s “just struggle” to defend its national sovereignty—a clear reference to Moscow’s ongoing war with Ukraine. Kim pledged his commitment to faithfully implement the comprehensive treaty signed by both leaders last year, which deepened military, economic, and strategic cooperation between the two nations.
The letter highlights the growing closeness between Pyongyang and Moscow as both face mounting pressure from the West. The strengthening of this partnership has raised concerns among global powers, particularly over possible arms transfers and military cooperation. Analysts suggest that Kim’s latest statement signals North Korea’s intent to further align itself with Russia in opposition to Western sanctions and influence.
As Russia continues its offensive in Ukraine, North Korea’s open endorsement of Moscow underscores the deepening geopolitical divide. Kim’s message not only reaffirms his personal bond with Putin but also reflects Pyongyang’s strategic calculation to cement its position as one of Moscow’s staunchest allies in the face of international isolation.
