Republicans were at the forefront in criticizing US President Joe Biden for his handling of the Afghanistan withdrawal that also evacuated over 100,000 Afghans, Americans, and other allies from the wartorn country. In the midst of several calls for impeachment from GOP lawmakers, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said that no impeachment will be happening.

Speaking at an event in Kentucky, McConnell, who represents the state, touched on whether impeachment of Biden would happen. This comes almost a week after a suicide bomber detonated themselves near Kabul airport, resulting in 13 US soldiers dead from the blast along with other Afghans. Even prior to the bombing, it should be noted that Republican lawmakers have already been calling for Biden’s impeachment, those same lawmakers are staunch supporters of Biden’s disgraced predecessor Donald Trump.

McConnell said that impeaching Biden would not happen as both the Senate and the House are controlled by the Democratic Party. The Senate, however, is evenly divided between both political parties but is nevertheless controlled by the Democratic Party.

“I think the way these behaviors get adjusted in this country is at the ballot box,” said McConnell. “The President is not going to be removed from office with a Democratic House and a narrowly Democratic Senate. That’s not going to happen.”

Biden has defended and doubled down on his decision to withdraw the US from Afghanistan after almost 20 years of US presence in the war-torn nation. Even as there is no longer any US military presence in Afghanistan, Biden has said that diplomatic efforts remain and those who were not able to evacuate from Afghanistan in time would still be able to leave.

Meanwhile, Biden criticized a new bill that was signed into law in Republican-led Texas that would effectively ban abortions in women who are already six weeks into their pregnancy. In response to the new legislation, Biden delivered a sharp rebuke, saying that the law violates the constitutional rights of women in the state. Biden also directed the DOJ and Health and Human Services to look into federal efforts that can be done for the women in the state to have access to safe abortions

“Complete strangers will now be empowered to inject themselves in the most private and personal health decisions faced by women,” said Biden in a statement released by the White House.
