HBO is keen to relive the drama surrounding the 2016 presidential election. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network is currently working on a yet-to-be-titled project based on source material from Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, who are currently writing about Donald Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton in securing the most coveted public seat in the US.
HBO Films president Len Amato said in a statement, “We are thrilled to continue our relationship with Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, whose work on their best-selling book Game Change set the bar for political reporting and storytelling inside a presidential campaign. Reuniting “Game Change” director and executive producer Jay Roach and Playtone producers Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman with Mark and John for a project based on their upcoming book promises to vividly capture the most unique and impactful event in modern American politics.”
Roach, who is tapped to direct the miniseries, also helmed HBO’s 2012 telepic “Game Change,” which chronicled John McCain’s losing campaign to become US president. San Francisco Examiner said the series also put a spotlight on vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin (portrayed by Julianne Moore), who became a media star during and after the campaign.
Vanity Fair said HBO is not the first network who plans on working a show about the 2016 presidential election. Ryan Murphy announced in February that an upcoming season of “American Horror Story” will focus on the said election. Showtime already has its own political docu-series titled “The Circus,” with the second season focusing on Trump’s first 100 days in office.
