Should we be looking forward to relive a White House scandal on TV real soon? According to a Hollywood Reporter exclusive, you should be.
“American Crime Story” showrunner Ryan Murphy, along with producers Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions, are said to be exploring the possibility of using A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President, the 2000 best-seller by author Jeffrey Toobin, as source material for Season 4. Murphy and the producers were said to have been fast-tracking the decision, as they are already meeting actors who will portray former White House intern Monica Lewinsky and Linda Tripp. Tripp was a former colleague of Lewinsky who recorded the latter’s conversations about her secret trysts with then-president Bill Clinton.
The Huffington Post said the Lewinsky-Clinton affair ran from 1995 to 1997. As a married president, the affair became the talk of the town, which led to impeachment hearings for Clinton. Eventually, Clinton was acquitted on all charges in relation to the affair.
This is not the first time the producers have collaborated with Toobin. Variety notes that “American Crime Story”’s first season, “The People Vs OJ Simpson,” was based off the author’s book, “The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson.” The show has since raked in multiple awards, including 10 Emmy wins. For Season 4, Murphy and the producers intend fashion it as a legal thriller, and will focus on Lewinsky, Paula Jones (who sued Clinton for sexual harrassment), and former federal judge and US Solicitor General Kenneth Starr.
