U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he will host a press conference with Tesla CEO Elon Musk at the White House on Friday, marking Musk’s final official day with the administration. Scheduled for 1:30 P.M. EST in the Oval Office, the event follows recent reports that Musk's off-boarding process had begun without a formal conversation between the two.
Musk served as a special government employee under Trump, leading the Department of Government Efficiency—a controversial role marked by efforts to cut federal spending and reduce government workforce. However, the department reportedly fell short of its cost-cutting goals, and Musk's approach, including slashing thousands of federal positions, drew widespread public backlash. The fallout triggered boycotts of Tesla products and a wave of vandalism against Tesla facilities.
While Musk had previously suggested that he would step away from government duties to refocus on Tesla and his other ventures, his sudden departure comes shortly after he publicly criticized a Trump-supported tax cut bill. During Tesla’s April earnings call, Musk had already hinted at reducing his political involvement amid rising investor concerns about his divided attention.
Trump's statement, though confirming Musk’s departure, also implied an ongoing relationship, saying Musk would "always be with us, helping all the way." Despite Musk’s exit, his influence within Trump's political orbit appears set to linger.
