Former President Donald Trump's near-death experience has left him a changed man, according to Rep. Maria Salazar (R-Fla.), who has been in close contact with his inner circle. Salazar, a self-described born-again Christian, spoke with a confidant of Trump who noted his apparent transformation since the assassination attempt.
"He believes that God has given him another opportunity," Salazar told DailyMail.com on Tuesday. "He believes that God spared his life and that he is a – I’m not sure if spiritual is the word or the adjective. I’m not sure if it’s more contemplative. But I do know that he is a different man."
Salazar, who represents Miami and serves on the GOP leadership's whip team, observed Trump's changes firsthand. She described his demeanor at the Republican convention, where he was surrounded by supporters while sporting a large white bandage on his wounded ear. According to Salazar, Trump "closed his eyes, and he prayed the whole time" during the benediction.
"That changes you as a person," Salazar noted. "And when you change as a person internally because somehow the powers of heaven have touched you, then you start leading a different life. This is like BC and AD."
Salazar's remarks came after attending an event hosted by Axios at the Republican convention, where she emphasized that God had spoken to Trump, offering him a "second opportunity" to unify the nation. Her comments followed those of Donald Trump Jr., who reflected on the profound impact of the assassination attempt on his father.
"There are events that change you for a couple of minutes, and there are events that change you permanently," Trump Jr. said at the event.
Trump's relationship with evangelical voters has been a cornerstone of his political career. Evangelicals played a crucial role in his strong showing in the Iowa caucuses 2016, which helped propel him to the GOP nomination. Throughout his presidency, Trump courted religious conservatives by nominating pro-life judges and selecting Mike Pence, a profoundly religious figure, as his running mate.
Despite his public displays of religiosity, such as holding a Bible aloft at campaign events, Trump has often been criticized for his lack of deep familiarity with religious texts. His controversial photo op in Lafayette Square, where he held a Bible upside down after authorities cleared the area of protesters, drew significant backlash.
In the wake of the assassination attempt, Donald Trump and his team have called for national unity. Several convention speakers, including Trump, have altered their speeches to reflect this new tone. Salazar highlighted this shift, noting that Trump's delegates were already unified before the attempt on his life, even after controversial changes to the party platform on abortion.
However, whether Trump will adopt a more conciliatory approach toward his political adversaries remains to be seen. He has vowed "retribution" against those who have targeted him in various legal battles, including cases related to New York fraud, hush money payments, classified documents, and the January 6 Capitol riot.
On Monday night, Trump showed emotion during Pastor James Ramsey's benediction. After briefly impersonating Trump, Ramsey called for divine intervention to "save us from violence, discord, and confusion, from pride and arrogance, and from every evil course of action."
"Thanks to you for keeping President Trump safe," Ramsey prayed. "Pray for the families of those affected by the demonic violence at the rally Saturday."
The assassination attempt has undeniably left a mark on Trump, prompting a period of introspection and a renewed emphasis on unity. Whether this transformation will extend to his broader political strategy remains an open question. Still, for now, those close to Trump, including Rep. Salazar, attest to a notable change in his demeanor and outlook.
