Donald Trump is up for reelection in November against his Democratic challenger, former vice president Joe Biden, and much of his focus has been on trying to maintain the votes in key states that won him the elections back in 2016. With the upcoming talks between the leaders of Kosovo and Serbia at the White House, many speculate that Trump is hoping the talks will help boost his chances for reelection.
The Guardian reports the Kosovo prime minister Avdullah Hoti will be meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic at the White House this week. According to White House aides, the two leaders will discuss economic issues and potentially strike a newer, bigger deal between the two countries. A senior adviser revealed that the objective of the talks is to bring in economic development that could change the dynamics among the political class. Whether Trump would be involved in these talks has yet to be determined.
However, this diplomatic push has earned pushback from other European diplomats. Led by Richard Grenell, who was once the US Ambassador to Germany, then acting Director of National Intelligence, the diplomats' reason that the European Union’s mediation process should be prioritized. This has also raised concerns on a possible land swap being part of the discussions between the two leaders.
The meeting between the leaders of Kosovo and Serbia also comes two months until the November elections. The meeting was initially supposed to take place back in June but did not push through as prosecutors in a court in The Hague announced the filing of a draft indictment against Kosovo’s then-president, Hashim Thaci, who was already on the way to Washington when it was announced.
Meanwhile, following Trump’s previous suggestion that Americans vote twice in the upcoming elections, Twitter has flagged a number of his recent tweets. The social media platform cited that it was a violation of a policy against illegal election activity.
The same comments of Trump were also flagged on Facebook, which placed a link directing users to the voting information center of the platform.
It should be noted that it is illegal to deliberately vote in an election twice. During Trump’s visit to North Carolina, where he made the suggestion, the state’s election released a memorandum reminding Americans in the state that is deliberately voting twice during an election is a crime.
