China condemned French President Emmanuel Macron’s remarks linking Russia’s war in Ukraine to the potential threat of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, calling the comparison a “double standard.” Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Macron warned that failing to stop Russia in Ukraine could have implications for Taiwan’s security.
In response, China’s embassy in Singapore posted on Facebook that comparing Ukraine and Taiwan is “unacceptable,” arguing Taiwan is purely an internal matter. The post emphasized the two situations are fundamentally different and accused critics of applying double standards while condemning them.
Although Macron was not named, the post included his photo from the event. China did not send senior military officials to the forum this year, instead dispatching a delegation of military scholars—marking a shift from its past presence.
China considers Taiwan a breakaway province with no sovereign status and has increased military exercises to assert its claim. In contrast, Taiwan’s democratically elected government maintains that only its people can determine their future.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, also at the forum, described China as an “imminent” threat, warning that any attempt to seize Taiwan would bring “devastating consequences” for the Indo-Pacific region.
Macron’s remarks echoed broader concerns among Western and Asian diplomats, many of whom warned that a Russian victory in Ukraine could embolden Beijing’s ambitions toward Taiwan. As one East Asian envoy noted, “The line must be held in Ukraine if a clear message is to be sent to China.”
The regional security dialogue underscored growing tensions over Taiwan and highlighted the global ramifications of the Ukraine conflict on Asia-Pacific stability.
