Boeing has proposed a revised delivery timeline for the new Air Force One aircraft, targeting 2027, according to U.S. Air Force officials. Originally slated for delivery in 2024, the two customized Boeing 747-8 jets were commissioned during President Donald Trump’s first term, following negotiations aimed at reducing costs.
Darlene Costello, acting assistant secretary of the Air Force, told the House Armed Services Committee that while Boeing has proposed 2027, the date is not confirmed. “We’re reviewing what capabilities might be traded off to meet that schedule,” she said, noting ongoing coordination with the White House regarding acceptable operational requirements for the presidential aircraft.
To accelerate production, the government has temporarily eased some security regulations at Boeing’s facility. This move has allowed the aerospace giant to increase productivity, though some technical and logistical issues still need resolution before a more accurate delivery estimate can be finalized.
In February, Trump criticized Boeing over the delays but dismissed Airbus as an alternative supplier. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg noted that Elon Musk, a Trump adviser, has been “helping us a lot” in advancing the aircraft’s development.
In response to the extended delays, the government has contracted defense firm L3Harris Technologies to retrofit a former Qatari government Boeing 747. This interim Air Force One aircraft could be operational by fall 2025, providing a temporary solution until Boeing completes the official replacements.
Boeing has not publicly commented on the new timeline. The updated Air Force One jets are expected to feature advanced defense systems, secure communications, and enhanced fuel capacity—capabilities critical to serving as the flying command center for the U.S. president.
