Associate Professor in Roman Archaeology, University of Nottingham
I am a Roman archaeologist with over 30 years of experience of fieldwork in Britain, Italy, Albania and Jordan. I am particularly interested in how people responded to the issue of "being Roman" in the different provinces of the Empire and how that was expressed through materials, architecture and food. I have also worked extensively on Roman towns and since 2006 have been running a major field project at the town of Venta Icenorum near Norwich. I am also interested in how the remains of the past are used in the creation of modern cultural identities. I have published widely in the fields of Roman and late Roman archaeology and am a peer reviewer for several grant-giving bodies and journals.
