Joanna Robinson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Glendon College, York University. Her research focuses on the human dimensions of environmental change. Her book Contested Water: The Struggle Against Water Privatization in the United States and Canada (MIT Press) examines mobilization to protect water resources and highlights the connection between global policy transformations and the development and outcomes of cross-movement coalitions at the local level, including environmental and labour movements. Her current major research projects, funded by grants from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, include a comparative study of the role of environmental-labour coalitions in creating opportunities to promote green jobs and shape climate change policies in California and British Columbia, and a study of workers in traditional carbon-intensive sectors in Ontario and the transition to a low-carbon economy. She is involved in several collaborative research projects on environmental movements and climate change mitigation.
