Research fellow, George Institute for Global Health
Gustavo is a Research Fellow within the Musculoskeletal Division at The George Institute for Global Health.
His research focuses on the efficacy of contemporary interventions for low back pain. He is also interested in health services and translational research, currently working on the SHaPED trial: a stepped-wedge cluster randomised trial aiming to evaluate and implement the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI) Model of Care for acute low back pain in Emergency Departments, in collaboration with Sydney Health Partners (Advanced Health Research and Translational Centre).
Gustavo is a physiotherapist and was granted a competitive International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) and awarded with the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) for his research doctorate degree at the Sydney Medical School, which he completed in 2017. Gustavo has published in high impact general journals (eg The BMJ) and specialist medical journals (eg Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases). He has authored one Cochrane review and co-authored another two. He has received various awards for his research, including the BMJ's Most Accessed Paper of 2015, and the 2015 Research Student Publication Award from Sydney Medical School.
Gustavo is currently an associate member of the ANZMUSC Clinical Trials Network, and a member of the European Pain Federation (EFIC) Task Force (TF) on Low Back Pain (+Sciatica).
