Tom M. Mitchell is the Founders University Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, where he founded the world's first Machine Learning Department. Mitchell's research lies in machine learning, artificial intelligence, cognitive neuroscience, and impact of AI on society. His current research includes developing machine learning approaches to natural language understanding by computers, as well as brain imaging studies of natural language understanding by humans. His AI research has been featured in media ranging from the New York Times, to CBS's 60 Minutes, to Chinese national television.
Mitchell has testified to several U.S. congressional committees on potential uses and impacts of artificial intelligence, and recently co-chaired a U.S. National Academies study on "Information Technology, Automation and the U.S. Workforce." He is an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, and the American Association of Arts and Sciences. He is Past President of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI).
