Trained as a sociologist, with a specialty in agriculture and food studies, globalization and development, social studies of science and technology, and gender. Ransom worked for a year as a AAAS fellow at the US Department of Agriculture in the Foreign Agricultural Service prior to becoming an assistant professor at the University of Richmond. She is now an associate professor in the School of International Affairs and senior research associate in the Rock Ethics Institute at The Pennsylvania State University.
