Charles Sellen s’est spécialisé sur la philanthropie depuis un séjour d'études à Georgetown University et la rédaction d’un rapport sur les fondations américaines à l’ambassade de France à Washington en 2004. Titulaire d'un doctorat en économie (Sciences Po Paris), il a collaboré au Centre d’études et de recherches sur la philanthropie (CerPhi), puis à l’Agence française de développement en tant que coordinateur éditorial des publications scientifiques.
Il est actuellement "Global Philanthropy Fellow" à la Lilly Family School of Philanthropy à Indiana University.
Ses travaux se situent à l'intersection de ces domaines : altruisme en économie, fondations privées et philanthropie, développement et solidarité internationale.
