Billy is a geographer and Lecturer in Disaster Management in the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute (HCRI), University of Manchester. He teaches international disaster management, theory and practice, and critical studies of geographic information systems (GIS). Billy’s research interests include critical GIS and GIScience, participatory mapping, digital humanitarianism, volunteered geographic information (VGI), citizen science, queer geographies, and spatial knowledge production. In his doctoral work at the University of Sydney Billy analysed the potential, application, and implications of VGI and participatory mapping in community bushfire risk reduction.
Billy holds a PhD in Geography, a Master of Applied Science (Spatial Information Science), and a Bachelor of Science (Geography, Geology & Geophysics), all from the University of Sydney.
