There are only a few months left before “The Last of Us 2” is officially released. Meanwhile, a supposed information leak suggests that the upcoming game from Naughty Dog could make headlines again later in the same year along with the release of PlayStation 5.

The Last of Us 2’ release date: Leak hints at a cross-generational launch

The year 2020 is going to be huge for Sony PlayStation fans. PlayStation 5 is confirmed to launch next year, along with several AAA video games exclusive on the PlayStation platform such as “The Last of Us 2.” The game, which was first announced in 2016, will be released on Feb. 21, 2020.

So far, the game is only listed for PS4, but a piece of information that recently leaked online implied that “The Last of Us 2,” along with “Ghost of Tsushima,” is slated to be one of the flagship video games for PlayStation 5. Sony allegedly wants to “fully exploit” the hype around the release of “The Last of Us 2,” as it is considered one of its biggest software projects for the fiscal year 2020.

The Last of Us 2’ leak: Should you believe it?

The leaked came from a 4Chan thread, so take this with a pinch of salt. To achieve this plan, the company’s marketing division reportedly asked for “much stronger support” for the games’ development, especially considering the new-generation console coming out in holiday 2020.

The biggest takeaway from this leak is the additional clue that “The Last of Us 2” will launch on both PlayStation 4 and 5. This still needs official confirmation from Sony but, with or without the leak, the game is obviously one of the biggest profit-generating software projects of the company next year. So it would not be a surprise if the leak aligns with the actual events in 2020.

Building “The Last of Us 2” to perfection for the next-generation console could also benefit Sony in several ways. For one, demonstrating the power of the new gaming hardware with a PlayStation-exclusive title could greatly help in marketing both the console and the game.
