The video game community has been raining down criticisms on Sony recently over its decisions with regards to cross-play. Fans want to be able to play against PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch players, but Sony just won’t budge. After weeks of silence, however, the company finally addressed the matter and promises to maybe, sort of, eventually come up with something.
Speaking to Eurogamer, the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, Shawn Layden, recently said that they are aware of the current outrage from the gaming community. He also said that the company was currently looking into potential solutions that will make everyone happy.
“We’re looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I’m confident we’ll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business,” Layden said.
As the publication notes, this is the first actual statement coming out of Sony apart from its initial statement, which was lambasted by the community. It didn’t really say anything of substance nor did it shine a light on exactly why the company was so against the concept of cross-play.
For now, it would seem that the Japanese company’s tactics are to simply wait out the outrage. As Polygon suggests, Sony is likely just biding its time until the storm subsides. After all, sales of its console didn’t really slow down after a similar controversy surrounding the game “Rocket League” a few years ago. The company likely believes that this is just another short-lived case of gamer outrage.
Sony’s reluctance to allow cross-play seems understandable, as well. After all, it wants to benefit from the microtransactions that are employed by games. Allowing items that were purchased on platforms like the Xbox One and the Switch to be used in PS4 would not directly benefit Sony.
