“Sherlock” season 5 is long-delayed and there is no question about it. The fourth installment aired its finale in 2017 and this year, the detective drama series is on its way to its three-year hiatus.

Is the series renewed?

Many fans are clamoring for the return of the show through “Sherlock” season 5 but up to now, BBC Network declines to comment or release an update about the show. It seems that the studio will not be confirming any renewal any time soon as well.

But then again, despite the lack of news from BBC with regards to “Sherlock” season 5, it does not mean that the broadcasting network already scrapped the series from its programming lineup. In fact, its officials once mentioned that the decision for the drama’s renewal is up to its creators - Steven Moffat and Mark Gattis who are currently busy with other projects.

What is Moffat and Gatiss’ plans for the drama?

The “Sherlock” season 5 creators insisted before that they can still work and air new episodes at some point but they have no idea yet as to when it will happen. The two also confessed in 2017 that they have not thought about the fifth season yet. They have no plans for it as of that time but they are not closing their doors for the possibility of filming again.

“I haven't really thought about it,” Moffat admitted to Digital Spy. “Mark has been doing other stuff as well, so we haven't sat down and had a proper talk about what we would do with another series."

Moreover, the show creators shared that although BBC has not renewed “Sherlock” season 5 yet, they have a good feeling that they will still do it and make the fans happy. But then, they said that they do not know when this will happen because they have conflicts in schedule.

also revealed that they probably need at least four years before they could set everything up.

In his Radio Times interview two years ago, Moffat also said, “Nobody has ever closed the door on ‘Sherlock.’” He added that he would be surprised if BBC will not order for their drama to return.

Finally, there are predictions that “Sherlock” season 5 is finally coming in 2021.
