Ever since Epic launched the Battle Royale version of “Fortnite,” the video game community has constantly compared it with “PUBG” and tried to pitch them against each other. Neither creators of these games publicly acknowledged the rivalry, but there were public exchanges of blows here and there. Recently, it would seem that a winner has finally emerged from this scuffle, with Brendan Green AKA PlayerUnknown saying, uncle.
As Comic Book reports, Green has recently stated that he is done with Battle Royale games and the genre, in general. With him being the creator of “PUBG,” the developer essentially launched the genre to new heights with his game. It is because of Green that “Fortnite,” “Apex Legends,” and the menagerie of similar games were given a chance to shine.
Unfortunately, the emergence of more popular rivals meant that “PUBG” was left to the wayside. What was once the undisputed king has since been dethroned and is now left floundering. The bigger and more successful title “Fortnite” has since taken over and it would seem that Epic is not letting up.
This could have been a contributing factor to why Green is no longer interested in creating another game like “PUBG” in the same genre. In a recent interview, he revealed that he is more interested in trying to make something new.
“I have lots of other ideas in my head for games I would like to play and we're going to see if other people would like to play them too," the developer explained. "That's where we're at. We haven't really started anything yet because we're team building.”
So, can this really be considered a victory for Epic and a defeat for “PUBG”? The answer would depend much on just how much one cares about such things, in the first place. For some, this could simply be Green moving to the next, great gaming adventure.
