RIDGEFIELD, Conn., Feb. 24, 2016 -- Owl Computing Technologies, Inc., a cybersecurity solutions provider, is proud to announce its latest patent related to cybersecurity for Critical Infrastructure digital assets. Owl now has 24 U.S. issued patents and this patent (US9094401) clearly defines the role Owl’s DualDiode plays in protecting the digital control systems used by industrial processes such as oil & gas refining, power generation, mining, LNG production, water treatment, etc.
For critical infrastructure operators, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) are key components of today’s automated facilities. These devices are specifically designed digital computers used to manage different industrial controls (valves, motors, switches, servos, etc.) and play a large role in the Industrial Internet of Things. However, with the increased automation and connectivity of digitally controlled processes, the cybersecurity threats and vulnerabilities have also increased.
This patent demonstrates how the Owl Perimeter Defense Solution (OPDS) protects a plant or facility from cyber-attack. Sitting between the vulnerable PLC and an open network where threats originate, the data diode based OPDS mitigates network based threats against the PLC while simultaneously allowing operational data (events, alarms, log messages, etc.) to be transferred to end-users outside the plant or facility.
Already implemented and deployed across a range of OPDS products, Owl’s solution is interoperable with a number of industrial control vendors, and is currently protecting hundreds of plants and industrial facilities globally.
“This patent proves again how Owl continues to be a thought leader and innovator in cybersecurity for the process control industry,” said Dr. Ron Mraz, CEO of Owl. “It represents a large step forward in identifying technology that can provide absolute cybersecurity for both new and existing industrial control systems.”
