The start of a new year becomes a chance for anime fans to continue waiting for any update on the making of “Overlord” season 4. While there is still huge support for the isekai series, the silence on its continuation on the part of the producers is not helping ease the uncertainty.

Overlord’ season 4 announcement: Is there a chance for the big news to arrive this year?

The truth is there is no official way to determine whether or not an announcement about “Overlord” season 4 would be made this year. However, it is not strange for the franchise to have a prolonged hiatus before confirming another anime season.

“Overlord’s” anime adaptation was ordered in March 2015 and started its 13-episode run in July of the same year. Season 2 was not announced until March 2017, translating to a production break of two years, and only premiered in January of 2018. However, it was followed by a much shorter break as the production of season 3 was confirmed in April 2018 and premiered in the summer of that year, too.

This timeline does not provide a rigid pattern that could help determine when “Overlord” season 4 could be announced or released. But it shows fans that there is not much reason to worry even if the anime show has not been renewed yet since season 3’s finale in October 2018.

It should also be noted that by the time of seasons 2 and 3’s production, there were enough light novel volumes as source materials. That could explain the very short break between these installments. Technically, there is also enough materials to cover for a one-cour “Overlord” season 4, suggesting there might be a chance for an announcement to take place this year.

Overlord’ season 4 release date could be delayed for another year

The release date of “Overlord” season 4 is another discussion considering the amount of light novel source materials available. Each season covered three volumes adapted in 13 episodes, but the release of new light novel installments has drastically slowed down in recent years.

By the time season 3 premiered, the original series was just up to volume 12, meaning the anime series is too close to surpassing the light novels. It is then very possible that even if “Overlord” season 4 was announced in 2020, producers would not rush its premiere to allow for more light novel volumes to be released first.
