COLUMBUS, Ohio, May 02, 2018 -- A traditional infrastructure project that transformed a unique downtown Newark, Ohio space into a thriving district fueling economic growth was recently recognized by The American Council of Engineering Companies of Ohio (ACEC) during its annual Engineering Excellence Awards competition. The program commends Ohio’s engineering industry by highlighting projects that demonstrate a high-degree of uniqueness, ingenuity, and value.
Arcadis and OHM Advisors were recognized with an Honor award for the “ReNewark” project. The two companies banded together to transform what was originally a traditional infrastructure project into a community redevelopment strategy to separate the combined sewer, consolidate and replace water lines, reconfigure traffic patterns, and add green infrastructure and pedestrian-friendly features to the historic downtown courthouse square.
Alongside the City of Newark and the Newark Community Improvement Corporation, Arcadis and OHM Advisors leveraged the multi-million-dollar sewer replacement to cost-effectively convert the unique downtown space into a thriving district fueling the community and metropolitan region.
Since the project commenced in 2014, Newark’s urban center has experienced tremendous gains in population, jobs, downtown living, and economic-generating activities – all quality of life advancements.
Today, the $25 million of public investment has directly resulted in more than $60 million in new private investment – including more than 100 built and planned downtown residential units, dozens of new businesses, and creation of the community-centric Canal Market District.
“We are thrilled that the team of Arcadis and OHM Advisors have been commended for its work to enhance the quality of life for residents of the Newark community,” said Tim Schutz, project manager, Arcadis. “The fact that the project has been recognized so early in its existence is a testament to the vision and hard work of all of those involved since its inception. We appreciate our partnership with the City of Newark and the Newark Community Improvement Corporation. This level of collaboration helps make the work we do possible.”
"This award is an incredible recognition of the innovative improvements that have transformed downtown Newark. It is a direct reflection of the impressive collaboration among so many entities who came together to benefit the city," said Aaron Call, engineering manager at OHM Advisors. "We are proud and honored to work alongside such dedicated project partners on a project with such influential long-term benefits for the community."
