Chipotle Q2 Earnings Beat Expectations as Sales Growth Drives Higher 2026 Outlook

Chipotle Q2 Earnings Beat Expectations as Sales Growth Drives Higher 2026 Outlook.

Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG) exceeded Wall Street expectations for the second quarter of 2026, reporting stronger-than-expected earnings and revenue fueled by new restaurant openings, higher customer spending, and continued progress under its "Recipe for Growth" strategy. The solid performance prompted the fast-casual restaurant chain to raise its full-year comparable sales forecast, sending its shares more than 5% higher in after-hours trading.

The California-based company posted adjusted earnings of $0.33 per share on $3.35 billion in revenue, surpassing analysts’ estimates of $0.32 per share and $3.33 billion in revenue. The better-than-expected results highlighted Chipotle’s resilience despite ongoing cost pressures affecting the restaurant industry.

Comparable restaurant sales increased 2.2% during the quarter, supported by a 1.2% rise in average check size and a 1% increase in customer transactions. Chipotle also expanded its footprint by opening 100 new restaurants, reinforcing its long-term growth strategy.

Digital sales remained a key contributor, accounting for 38.3% of total food and beverage revenue, compared with 35.5% in the same quarter last year. The company continues to benefit from strong online ordering demand and customer engagement through its digital platforms.

Operating costs were mixed during the quarter. Packaging expenses climbed to 29.7% of revenue, up from 28.9% a year earlier, primarily due to inflation in beef and freight costs. However, Chipotle offset part of those increases through menu price adjustments and lower avocado and dairy expenses.

The company has been executing its "Recipe for Growth" initiative, which focuses on menu innovation, artificial intelligence-driven operational improvements, restaurant modernization, and an enhanced Chipotle Rewards program designed to strengthen customer loyalty.

Chief Executive Officer Scott Boatwright said the company is gaining momentum as the strategy takes shape. He noted that Chipotle is prioritizing menu innovation, expanding rewards engagement, improving hospitality across its restaurants, and capturing more group dining occasions to support sustainable growth.

Following the upbeat quarterly performance and improved outlook, investors responded positively, pushing Chipotle shares up more than 5% in after-hours trading.
