Netizens question Michelle Obama as she promotes new Instagram TV series

Michelle Obama has a new Instagram TV series that will premiere later this month. However, some people are not too happy with the former’s First Lady’s latest project and have voiced their criticisms on social media.

In a partnership with a media company called ATTN:, Michelle Obama's new IGTV series titled “A Year of Firsts,” will be out later this month, according to Daily Mail. As its name suggests, it will follow the lives of four students as they tackle the challenges they face during their freshman year.

The students that will appear on the show are identified as Regan Dunn, Hasseeb, Linette Delgado, and Robert Booker. They are from Washington DC, North Dakota, California, and Alabama respectively.

“Can't wait for you all to meet them and learn more about what taking that leap really feels like, day in and day out,” Michelle Obama said. The IGTV series is a continuation of her Reach Higher initiative, which was started when her husband, Barack Obama, was still in office as president.

Michelle’s initiative is also connected to Barack Obama’s North Star 2020 program, which he launch while still in office. North Star 2020’s goal is to make America become the country with the highest college graduation rate. Meanwhile, Michelle’s Reach Higher initiative supports that of her husband as it aims to encourage students to pursue education beyond high school.

“The first year of college is exciting, but also a little nerve-racking,” Michelle Obama said. “As a first-generation college student myself, I know how intimidating it can be to try to navigate through a new place and make new friends, all while trying to figure out who you are and who you want to be.”

But some netizens are not too happy with Mrs. Obama’s new TV series. “What about a documentary of kids who want to go to college or a tech school but can’t…” a Twitter user commented, Express reported.

Others are questioning Michelle’s partnership with Instagram, which is a Facebook subsidiary. “Dear @MichelleObama why must you legitimize a Facebook-owned company right now?” AJ tweeted. “Facebook is under attack, rightly so, for facilitating the spread of disinformation all over the world.”

The Twitter user also suggested that Michelle Obama could have posted the series to a different platform. “You could put your series on the open web instead,” AJ added. “Please consider.”

Another netizen noted that the TV series is not for everyone as there are those who were not able to finish high school. “This is all great but what about those who have no education and drop out of our inner-city school systems,” a user tweeted.
