This newly signed agreement allows for continued access by the majority of Humana’s current 3.3 million members and future enrollees across the country to SilverSneakers, the leading community fitness program for older adults. The contract extension reaffirms Humana’s commitment to help its Medicare Advantage members achieve their best health. SilverSneakers, available to most Humana members since 2004, provides a platform that motivates members to actively improve their physical health and make important and frequent social connections that are critical to a long and healthy life.
“We share a common mission with Humana to provide seniors with opportunities and resources to improve their overall health so that they can live their best lives,” said Donato Tramuto, Chief Executive Officer of Tivity Health. “Humana understands that the value of SilverSneakers extends well beyond the physical health benefits. Studies show that loneliness and social isolation can shorten one’s lifespan by as much as eight years. We are proud to partner with Humana to offer a program that enables healthier aging by providing seniors and others with Medicare both physical activity and social connection.”
“At Humana, we believe health and lifestyle are intrinsically connected and must be addressed together with an approach that goes beyond clinical treatments,” said Bruce Broussard, President and Chief Executive Officer, Humana. “SilverSneakers is a key element of many Humana Medicare Advantage plans because the proactive program takes a holistic direction to enhance a senior’s complete health, providing both physical benefits and social enrichment. Continuing this partnership with Tivity Health is an important part of our commitment to an outcomes-based approach to improving the health and well-being of our Medicare Advantage members.”
According to an annual survey of participants conducted in 2016, 91 percent of SilverSneakers members say that the program has improved their quality of life. There is also a significant link between fitness and social connections among SilverSneakers members, with 65 percent reporting that they have made valuable and lasting friendships due to the program. The 2016 survey also indicated that SilverSneakers drives positive behavior change – 61 percent of those who did not exercise prior to enrolling in the program reported exercising three or more days per week after joining. SilverSneakers has a Net Promoter Score that is consistently above 80, ranking SilverSneakers among the top brands in the world when measuring customer loyalty.
Using proven methodologies and in peer-reviewed research, SilverSneakers has been shown to increase physical activity and social interaction in older adults, resulting in higher quality of life and lower health care costs. SilverSneakers engages participants in strength training, aerobic and flexibility exercise with access to a variety of venues, programs and group activities designed specifically for older adults and in many cases fostered by members themselves.
SilverSneakers was founded in 1992 and is available to more than 15.8 million eligible members at no additional cost through the nation’s leading Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Supplement carriers and group retiree plans.
