Right now, Google actually already has an existing music streaming service via Google Play Music, but its upcoming YouTube Remix is likely to kill that option. This new project is reportedly going to be the company’s answer to Apple Music and Spotify, but with a suitable twist in that, it will also feature music videos along with just the tunes.
This news comes via sources familiar with the matter, Droid-Life reports, which notes that users will actually be forced off of Play Music and onto Remix by the end of the year. It’s worth pointing out that nothing has been officially confirmed, but if this is the case, users on the current Google music streaming service will have only until the end of 2018 to make the switch.
In any case, the creation of Remix has been a journey that reportedly started as far back as December of 2017, when Google decided that it needed something that it can use to compete with Apple Music and Spotify. Considering just how popular music streaming has become over the last decade, it’s clear that this is the medium of consumption that modern listeners prefer.
The existence of Remix itself has been confirmed for quite a while, but some of the details have been a bit sketchy. What is known right now is that the music that users will have access to can come via recommended playlists based on several factors that include time of day and location.
As Fortune reports, ditching Play Music in favor of Remix makes a lot of sense. It would be pointless for Google to maintain two separate music streaming services at the same time because they would be competing with each other on top of having to contend with Apple Music and Spotify. By focusing on only one, the company has a chance of actually making an impact.
