Normally, hacking in video games present a problem because of how they ruin the gameplay experience of others during matches. However, recent developments have shown that some Fortnite player accounts have gotten hacked, which reportedly comes with financial consequences. Users are basically getting charged for purchases they never made.

Gamers have taken to Reddit as well as Epic Games’ own forums to voice their complaints about the situation, with many sharing their startling stories of hacking. Some of the complaints even noted how they are being billed for purchases worth several hundreds of dollars. A common theme among the complaints is how they have never even clicked on any link that would cost them money with regards to Fortnite.

Some players are even finding themselves buying the paid version of the game called “Save The World” without ever actually meaning to do so, Kotaku reports. While such cases have since resulted in refunds to the players, it still presents a troubling issue.

According to the players who are reporting cases of hacking, they have not changed their profile passwords recently. However, user data is collected and stored by Epic, which does bring up the possibility that the developers’ servers have been compromised.

In an email to the publication, a spokesperson for Epic notes that they are already aware of the issue and have been working to resolve it. Apparently, the accounts were hacked using techniques that are well known in the community. Providing a quick resolution to this issue is going to be important for the developers, especially since it is also planning on releasing the game on mobile devices.

“We are aware of instances where users’ accounts have been compromised using well-known hacking techniques and are working to resolve these issues directly with those players affected. Any players who believe their account has been compromised should reach out to our player support immediately,” the email reads.
