SAN DIEGO, Feb. 14, 2018 -- Ohio has now moved from the 4th highest overdoses due to opioids to the 3rd highest in the country, According to the news site The Recover. The Ohio Centers for Disease Control reported 5,232 deaths due to opioid overdoses in the 12 months ending on June 31, 2017. The later half of the year is expected to have a higher death toll once those numbers become available.

The 5,232 deaths are up from the 2016 numbers of 4,050 Ohio residents, a 32.8 percent increase compared to 2015 when there were 3,050 overdose deaths. This is now the steepest increase in over 3 years, with a 39% increase. This shows the alarming trend is growing consistently and fast. Ohio is only number 3 in the country. Pennsylvania had the highest increase of 43.4% of overdose deaths, ending the June 31 2017 with 5,443 deaths. In second is Florida, with an increase of 39.4%, or 5, 540 deaths.
“Ohio can and must do better to end the needless suffering caused by the grip of addiction and overdose deaths,” said Lori Criss, chief executive officer of the Ohio Council of Behavioral Health Providers. “We need a full continuum of treatment and recovery services in every community, and we need prevention and early intervention services in every school.”
The state of Ohio has already proposed new regulations on drug manufactures to halt suspicious orders of fentanyl. New limits have already been put in place for prescription painkillers, which has seemed to make a difference in prescription painkiller deaths. But the drug Fentanyl is the new synthetic danger killing its users with its overpowering affects.
Treatment centers in Ohio have seen this dangerous trend over the last year and are equipped to handle medically detoxing patients from these types of drugs.
