College students have many factors that place them at risk for substance abuse. College students have access to many types of drugs, and often partake in underage drinking and binge drinking. Also for many of the students, it’s their first time living away from home without their parent’s supervision, with lots of new freedom. Sometimes this opens the door for college students to make poor choices that they may not have made in the past.
College can bring stress and depression that many students have not experienced before and could turn to drugs or alcohol to cope. Sometimes recreational use can turn into an addiction that spirals out of control. Leaving the student with the stress of college and battling addiction which can lead to the student a multitude of issues.
Some of the most commonly abused drugs in college are alcohol, marijuana, ecstasy – commonly known as “molly” and prescription drugs. One of the most abused prescription drugs is Adderall – This drug is stimulant is prescribed to help with (ADHD) - attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and other disorders. Unfortunately, some college students use Adderall as a study aid, enabling them to stay up and study through the night before an exam or to get an assignment completed. Adderall has a high potential for addiction, and can have other adverse health consequences.
