SpaceX's Starlink is transforming communication for Navy sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, providing high-speed internet access that allows them to stay connected with family and friends, even from the ocean's most remote regions. This advancement marks a significant improvement in quality of life and work for sailors.
SpaceX Starlink Transforms Navy Communications with High-Speed Internet Access Aboard USS Abraham Lincoln
SpaceX's Starlink offers high-speed satellite internet in the Earth's most remote regions, including the ocean's center, per Teslarati.
Sailors in the United States Navy are now discovering this, as ships are equipped with Sailor Edge Afloat and Ashore, also known as SEA2. SEA2 utilizes low-orbit satellites to provide high-speed internet access to shore sites and vessels.
Sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln are gaining internet access to communicate with their family and friends, who may be thousands of miles away.
Rob Wolborsky, Chief Engineer at the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command (NAVWAR), stated:
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime transformation for the warfighter, and we are pressing to deliver it to the fleet as fast and aggressively as possible. We are also focusing on getting the maximum value from this capability in parallel with delivering it. It will be a leap forward in quality of service afloat for both quality of life and work. The sky, or even better space, is the limit to what can and will be done with this capability once we get it into the hands of our warfighters.”
Previously, warships utilized Department of Defense satellites situated 22,300 miles distant and offered unreliable, low-speed internet connectivity.
The Navy recognized a significant opportunity to enhance the pace and initially implemented a non-geostationary satellite terminal (STtNG) to acquire tactical feeds and secure access to low-orbit satellites.
Subsequently, Starlink antennas were deployed, enabling one gigabit per second speeds.
Additionally, high-speed internet access has maritime applications, such as enhancing warfighting and facilitating GPS location.
Carnival Cruise Line Sees Surge in Guest Satisfaction with Starlink’s High-Speed Internet on All Ships
In a May report, CEO Josh Weinstein referred to SpaceX's low-latency internet service, Starlink, as a "game-changer" for Carnival Cruiseline and its passengers.
“Starlink has been a game-changer for the onboard connectivity experience our cruise lines deliver to their guests, and we’ve already seen a surge in guest satisfaction and positive feedback from the super-fast and reliable Wi-Fi service we provide onboard,” Weinstein said.
Starlink is accessible on all 90 of Carnival's cruise ships and is being implemented to enhance the guest and crew experience.
“We see this technology as a win-win-win – it provides our guests with more flexibility to stay as connected as they’d like on vacation, it allows our crew to stay in touch with friends and loved ones, and it enhances our onboard operational systems,” Weinstein added.
Installations were recently finalized to enhance Wi-Fi reliability, increase capacity, and provide quicker service to customers and crew members.
Carnival initiated the phased implementation of Starlink on its cruise ships across its various brands, including Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn, P&O Cruises (Australia), Costa Cruises, P&O Cruises (UK), and Cunard, in December 2022.
This is not the first time a marine company has elected to employ Starlink to meet its internet requirements. Last year, Maersk declared that it would implement Starlink for its maritime operations to provide its personnel with more consistent bandwidth for communication with their families.
