California-based artist, Gabriel Greenlaw, takes inspiration from microscopic neurological elements, expanding their scale millions of times larger. These sculptures represent the delicate network of impulses that define our human experience. By increasing the scale of these complex, organic forms, viewers are immersed in the inherent beauty and tension present in our central nervous systems. This tension is further heightened by Greenlaw’s meticulous exploration and combination of traditionally incompatible glasses. The resulting works have a sense of movement, life, and evoke conversations about human growth and evolution.
A painting conservator by profession, Miami-based artist Emily MK, combines historic paint analysis with contemporary microscopy and printmaking to form works that exemplify a unique union of science and art. MK’s multi-step process begins with paints made from natural sources, like the blood of cochineal bugs. These paints are used to create tiny “microsculptures,” typically not more than 1 inch in length. The microsculptures are photographed under a microscope, and the images are digitally merged to form a single, seamless print of the microsculpture at a monumental scale. According to MK, “I look at the micro and the macro, the historic and the contemporary, and I combine them to create a world of modern giants made of old traditions; beauty from blood.”
“I love how both Gabriel and Emily are exploring scientific subjects and techniques in their work,” said Cheryl White, Director of Glass Wheel Studio. “Both exhibitions feature stunning works of art, but also showcase the in-depth processes artists use to bring their visions to life.”
Greenlaw will be at the Chrysler Museum Glass Studio for a free glassblowing demo on Friday, September 16 at noon. Fans can also meet both artists and purchase works at the opening that night while enjoying a cash bar and outdoor projection in Glass Wheel’s courtyard.
